New Zealand String Quartet

The New Zealand String Quartet | Te Rōpū Tūrū o Aotearoa exists to provide transformational musical experiences for all New Zealanders.

Since being established in 1987, the NZSQ has earned an international reputation for its insightful interpretations, compelling communication, and dynamic performing style.

The NZSQ is made up of four talented musicians – Helene Pohl (Violin I), Peter Clark (Violin II), Gillian Ansell (Viola) and Rolf Gjelsten (Cello) – who are all dedicated performers and mentors to students across the country. The three longest-serving members of the Quartet, Helene, Rolf, and Gillian, have each been awarded the MNZM (Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit) honour for services to music in New Zealand. The instruments of the NZSQ span the ‘golden age’ of Italian luthiery (the craft of stringed instruments). The oldest instrument in the NZSQ family, Gillian’s viola, is over 400 years old.

The NZSQ’s performance is generously supported by Darvill Mellors & Co.
